This promotional campaign and CD packaging takes queues from background research that points to Shorter’s Blue Note era work, but overall strives to emulate the “mood” of the music by using non-traditional media to create an expressive representation of the song “Joy Ryder.” Type and color choices have been influenced by Blue Note album covers of the ’60s, both as an homage and as an aesthetic flag that signifies “jazz record.” The imagery incorporated illustrates both the structure of the jazz beats and the vibrant energy of the solos, as well as illustrating the overall idea of “breaking the sound barrier.” Design Methodologies, Winter 2008
